The Uppsala Peace Coalition sending you this letter have a lot of trust in the United Nations for promoting and keeping peace. We are also aware of your personal commitment to this cause. Therefore, we would draw your attention to the Uppsala Declaration on the Environmental Effects of War passed on 25 April which is attached. The whole exercise, which included seminars at the Karolinska institute and a conference at the House of Parliament, is reported at www.uraniumconference.org.

Also, we would like you to know that the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, to which we extended a special invitation to take part, constructed some strange and unconvincing excuses for not showing up at all. A number of media and organisations did the same, which we ascribe to opportunism and lack of civil courage.
